How to Solve a Rubik's Cube

In this video, which has helped more than 5 million people, I teach you step by step the easiest method there is to solve a Rubik's Cube.

If you want to learn with the visual version, you can find it below.

1. White Cross

DaisyWhite Cross

We are going to build a white cross, with each white edge matching the center of its color. The easiest way is to make a daisy: put the 4 white edges on the yellow face, then bring them one by one down to the white face, lining each one up with the center of the same color.

Make a daisy:just move the white edges around the yellow center, making sure the white sticker touches the yellow center.
Special case:a flipped white edge. Just take it out and put it back the right way.
Make the white cross:line each white edge up with the center of the same color, then bring it down to the white face by turning the front face twice.

2. White Corners

White CrossWhite Corners

For this step you use a simple algorithm called the "Sexy Move"

RRUUR'R’U'U’

Find a white corner on the top face and place it above the spot where it belongs.

Insert a white corner:move a white corner between its two matching colors.
The "Sexy Move" algorithmR U R' U' (Right, Up, Right inverted, Up inverted) is the algorithm that inserts the white corners.
RRUUR'R’U'U’
Sexy Move R U R' U'Just repeat it until the corner is inserted with its white sticker facing down.
RRUUR'R’U'U’

3. The edges

First layerEdges

Complete the second layer by inserting the edges in the right place. Use the algorithm that matches where the edge has to go.

Edge to the right:U R U' R' U' > L' U L
UURRU'U’R'R’U'U’L'L’UULL
Edge to the left:U' L' U L U < R U' R'
U'U’L'L’UULLUURRU'U’R'R’
Special case:If an edge is in the wrong place, take it out, then insert it correctly.

4. The yellow cross

There are 3 possible cases:

Case Dot
Dot
Case Reverse L
Reverse L
Case Line
Line

Make a yellow cross on the top face, using the algorithm that matches the shape (dot, reverse L, line).

Line:F (sexy move) F'
FFRRUUR'R’U'U’F'F’
Reverse L:F (sexy move) F' > line
FFRRUUR'R’U'U’F'F’
Dot:F (sexy move) F' > reverse L
FFRRUUR'R’U'U’F'F’

5. The yellow cross edges

Yellow CrossYellow Edges

Now we put the yellow cross edges in the right place.

The "Sune" algorithm:R U R' U R U2 R'
RRUUR'R’UURRU'U’U'U’R'R’
Adjacent swap:Two correct edges next to each other. Put one at the back and one on the right, then do the "Sune" once.
Opposite swap:Two correct edges facing each other. Do the "Sune" once with a correct edge in front.

6. Good corner

Yellow EdgesGood Corner

Find a yellow corner in the right place and hold it on your right.

The "Niklas" algorithm:L' U R U' L U R'
L'L’UURRU'U’LLUUR'R’
No correct corner:Do the "Niklas". You should now have one correct corner.
1 correct corner:Do the "Niklas" once. Repeat if needed.

7. Finish the cube

Good CornerSolved cube

Turn the cube over and use the "sexy move" to finish the cube.

Turn the cube over:Turn the whole cube so the yellow face is down, with an unsolved corner at the bottom right.
Do the "Sexy Move":Repeat the algorithm until all the corners are oriented correctly.
Repeat:Turn the bottom face (do NOT turn the whole cube) to bring another unsolved corner to the bottom right. Repeat for every corner.

Congratulations, you solved your first Rubik's Cube!
